If you answered yes then you need to know about benefits. You need to know what benefits are, how they differ from features. It’s time to learn create what are called “benefit statements”.

Knowing this can make life easier. It can help you sell more. Why?

Because the bottom line in selling is simple. There is no “secret” to selling. There is only this one staggering truth.

Understand this and you can sell anything. Fail to understand this and you will be doomed to forever wonder why you aren’t selling more.

Ready for the truth? Don’t be fooled by its simplicity. The truth is …

People buy what they want!

Always have. Always will.

If they want your product they will buy it. If they don’t want it they simply won’t take action, no matter how logical your argument for them to buy is made.

Let me put it another way.

People buy on emotion and defend that purchase with logic.

Let’s look at that again. They buy based on emotion (they buy what they want) but then defend their choice using logic.

Here’s an example. This actually happened to a friend of mine. You have a good car, a car that is almost paid off. But your car needs new tires. So you go to the car dealer and, since you are there anyway, you look at the new models. The salesperson offers you some trade in values for your existing car. You suddenly realize that your old beater is worth more than you thought. Two hours later you are driving home in a brand new car!

How did you get from needing tires to buying a new car?

Emotion!

You saw the car. You smelled that new car smell. You saw yourself driving a new car. And, after all, you deserve it! This is your life. You work hard. You sacrifice for your family. You don’t ask for much. You DESERVE a new car!

See the emotion there?

But how will you defend that purchase to your spouse, your friends or even to yourself? You bought a new car when yours was almost paid off? Are you nuts? You bought a new car in this economy? Are you kidding me?

But you are ready with your answer. Logic will save the day!

It goes something like this.

• New tires were going to cost me $1100! Who knew tires cost so much?
• My old car was almost out of warranty anyway. And you know that’s when expensive repairs start to happen.
• We are taking a trip later this year and I wanted to make sure we were all safe.
• My new car is costing only $65 per month more than my old car.
• My new car gets 10 miles more per gallon than my old car! I’m helping save the environment!

On and on it goes – logic trying to defend what was a purely emotional buy. You bought the new car for one reason and one reason only – you WANTED a new car! Nothing wrong with that. But logic was not the main factor.

FACT: If humans bought cars based on logic we would all drive the same car … the cheapest and safest car on the road! But we don’t. We buy what we want – and then justify it to the world with the logic of why it was the right choice for us.

So how does this apply to doing business online?

The key for business people like you and me is to quickly tell our prospective customers why they should want what we have. In other words, don’t talk about features but instead talk about benefits! We have to understand the difference between features and benefits and then let our prospects know why they should want what we offer.

That’s important enough to say again. You must let your prospect know why they should want what you offer.

It all starts with understanding the difference between a feature and a benefit. Understanding the difference between a feature and a benefit is vital, and easy.

• A feature is what your product does.
• A benefit is what is does for me!

Let’s look at one example from the real world. I’m in a car mood today so I’ll stick with that for now.

One of my favorite cars has always been the Corvette. I love the look of the Corvette and am old enough that I grew up wanting what we called the “Stingray”. As a boy I fantasized about driving down the road driving my shiny new red Corvette.

The Corvette has some outstanding features. Here are two.

1. The Corvette can go 205 miles per hour
2. The Corvette can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 4 seconds

Sounds like fun, but are these the reasons that people pay between $48,000 and $105,000 for these cars? (Prices according to Chevrolet.com for model year 2010)

In my view, the answer is no. The reason people buy Corvettes is not to go from 0 to 60 in under four seconds.

The reason people buy Corvettes is to be seen driving a Corvette. A Corvette is simply a rolling envy machine!

People who buy Corvettes often do so for the feeling they get being seen driving a Corvette.

The same can be said of many products, including yours. Here are some products that are sold everyday using a very emotional approach.

• Clothing
• Jewelry
• Houses
• Art
• Business Opportunities
• Competitive “spying” programs
• Ad trackers
• How to make money on Clickbank products
• And many more!

How can you sell your product using emotion?

That’s a great question. While I don’t know your specific situation I can offer some guidelines to help.

There are two super-motivators that apply to almost every product. These are very emotion-driven reasons to buy something, especially something online. Both create powerful emotions that will cause people to act now, which is what all online sellers (Product owners and affiliate marketers) want.

1. Promise of gain
2. Fear of loss

Promise of gain almost always applies to making money but can sometimes be another type of gain. People want all sorts of things (including making money) like prestige, power, fame, to leave a legacy and more.

QUESTION: How does your product help your customer gain something?

Fear of loss is the other side of the coin. This is where all the scarcity selling online comes from. Offline merchants use it too. How many times have you heard your local department or furniture store claim their current sale is the “biggest sale of the year!” That’s fear of loss telling you to act now or pay more later.

QUESTION: How does your product help your customer avoid losing out?

The more you know about how your product satisfies these two needs – the need to gain and the need to avoid loss – the more you will sell. Your ads, your sales letters, your tweets, your signature lines — all of your marketing needs to be filled with benefit statements that drip of promise of gain or fear of loss.

ACTION STEP: How to Translate Features into Benefits

Here are four simple steps to help you translate your product or service’s features (what it does) into benefits (what it does for me).

After you make your list, be sure to review your selling literature, be it a web page, email or brochure, and make sure that you are selling benefits instead of features.

After all, everybody wants to know what’s in it for them.

1. List the key features of your product … the things that make it worth having. Describe what each one does; how it works.
2. Determine what that means to the customer. More free time? Feel safer at night? More financial freedom? Write it down next to the feature.
3. Be able to state every feature in terms of money. Either making a gain or avoiding loss. Write it down next to the advantage.
4. Write out benefit statements for each feature. Memorize your list. Write it down and carry it for quick reference.

You have now created a feature, advantage, and benefit list. By committing these statements to memory and using them often, you will now be speaking the prospect’s language, the language of saving or making money.

And that is the sound they love to hear.

You have probably heard the term “affiliate program” many times. People talk about them, advertise them, and promote them.

Every marketer and their pet hamster (including me) have recommended you start your online career by being an “affiliate”.

But has anyone actually defined an affiliate program for you? Do you understand what being an affiliate is all about?

Whether you’re a newbie or just a little overwhelmed by all the information floating around online, I’d like to help you understand what affiliate programs are and what they can do for you.

An affiliate program (sometimes called an associate program) is basically defined as an arrangement in which an online merchant (such as Amazon.com) pays you a commission to send them traffic.

The term “traffic” simply means visitors.

So, you sign up to be an affiliate of a website and you send visitors to that site. When those visitors take a specific action (most commonly – when they buy something) you get paid.

Simple!

Every affiliate program out there will provide you with what is called an “affiliate link”. This is a special link that identifies you (the affiliate) as the source of traffic.

More about affiliate links in an upcoming article.

Each time someone uses your link or website to click onto the merchant’s website and buys something, you are paid a certain percentage of that purchase.

But how does the site know that YOU sent that visitor? Most sites use a technology called “cookies”. This simply means that a small file is placed on the visitor’s computer identifying you as the source of the referral.

That way the company can know for sure that you should be paid the commission when the visitor buys something.

Most major affiliate programs, including Clickbank, use cookies to identify which affiliate sent which visitor.

There are at least three parties involved in any affiliate transaction:

1. The company who sells the product (or vendor as Clickbank calls them)
2. The affiliate who sends the traffic (that’s you!)
3. The person who visits the site by clicking your affiliate link (the visitor)

Affiliate programs do not bring good profits without some form of effort and organization on your part.

To make money with affiliate programs you will need to learn how to “drive” traffic. Driving traffic simply means sending visitors to a website you are promoting using paid advertising or free marketing methods such as article marketing or social media like Twitter.

Affiliate marketing can be very profitable if you learn the system and promote it the right way. To maximize their profits, most affiliates choose more than one to promote.

There is usually nothing complicated about signing up for an affiliate program. Most programs are free to join.

But there is a downside here that you must avoid.

Since most affiliate programs are free to join, there is a temptation to join many at one time thinking you will be able to promote them all. This can lead to confusion.

My advice is to find a product you believe in and promote it with all your heart.

Become an expert at promoting product X and you will learn how to promote any product. Then you can move on to promoting other products easily.

You see, the success is in the process and in the products you choose to promote.

Once you sign up for a program, you are usually free to place links on your website and in other places.

Affiliates are paid according to a legal arrangement agreed to upon sign-up. Affiliate commissions are based on the number of people the affiliate sends to the merchant’s site, or the number of their referrals who make a purchase or take some other type of action.

There are three basic structures for how affiliates are paid:

1. Pay Per Sale: The most common arrangement. When someone you send to the business’ website buys something, you earn a certain percentage or designated dollar amount.

1. Pay Per Visit: Some companies pay you based on the number of people your link sends to their website, whether they make a purchase or not.

1. Per Lead: You are paid when someone uses your affiliate link to visit the company’s website and opts in, entering some required information (like an email address) the business can use as a sales lead.

Generally speaking, if your affiliate link on your website or other location brings their business traffic or money, the merchant will pay you accordingly.

As an affiliate, you help bring in the customer and the company does everything else: order processing, collecting payment, shipping, etc.

For you, promoting an affiliate program or programs almost adds up to free money. Just look at the benefits you get when promoting as an affiliate.

As an affiliate you never have to …

• Create a product
• Provide customer service
• Have a website of your own
• Provide a download page

As an affiliate you simply promote and get paid. It is simply the easiest way to earn money online.

The company wins too! For businesses, offering an affiliate program is not only an excellent way to sell products online, but also serves as a powerful and cost- effective marketing strategy.

Why? Because you (the affiliate) solve their number one problem – getting enough traffic to their website!

You get paid, and the company gets you to promote for them. A classic win-win!

It’s all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life and forget to do those basic things that create real results in our lives.

While posting video and Twittering are all fine and good, we MUST use the basic and proven methods of marketing if we want to survive and thrive.

And email marketing is one of those basics, one you might be overlooking right now.

It is undeniable that the MOST powerful form of marketing online today is email marketing.

If you look at any major product launch you will see they are done with email marketing. Even these silly “email is dead” desktop delivery products are sold using the medium they claim to be replacing … email!

Ever wonder why?

The reason is simple. Email marketing works!

Recent studies show that over 40% of people surveyed buy things online based on an email they receive. I know I do, and I’m willing to guess that you have bought products too that you learned about in your email inbox. And who hasn’t visited a site and filled in a form to learn more about a product they were interested in?

These things are now a part of all good marketing. The President uses email. Your bank uses email. All online marketers (every single one) uses email. Isn’t it time you experienced the full power of email marketing too?

While video might be replacing long written sales letters (it is) nothing will replace email. In fact, every sales letter you see that is done with video contains that ever-present “sign up for the next video” box for you to fill in.

And then it’s the email follow up that sells us on taking action.

I know you know this because you, like me, get all those “act now” messages!

So now the questions is this – how can YOU use ethical, permission based email marketing to promote the products or programs that will help YOU earn a full time living online?

Here are five ways you can use email to do more. To sell more. To keep more customers happy. I hope you use each one.

1. CUSTOMER FOLLOW UP

Whether it’s a simple as a one-time ‘thank you’ or as elaborate as a 50 message follow up system, customers love to know you care.

At a minimum, send one message thanking customers for every order.

To power up this idea, create a follow up system using your favorite autoresponder and offer your customer more chances to buy. Share neat ways they can use the product they bought from you. Be helpful in every way you can.

If you do nothing more than give a hearty recommendation for the products you use and like you will sell more than ever AND help your customers too. They are likely having the same problems you face. If you have a solution, share it.

Keep messages short and they will always be welcome.

2. CUSTOMER LEARNING

Do you offer a product that takes a bit of learning to use? Most products do take a bit of instruction to master.

Teach your customers how to get the benefits they deserve from your product or service via email.

Keep messages on topic and separate your follow up series into bite-size learning pieces. These follow up messages can bring your refund rate to near zero … a good thing indeed.

3. PRE-SALES SERIES

This is what most people think of when they think about email marketing. Sending emails to sell a product. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, statistics prove it works!

Think about this – if even the best websites out there only convert 2% of visitors into customers on their first visit what happens to the 98% of people who don’t buy?

Sadly, this is what happens.

• They leave
• They never come back
• They buy from someone else

Bummer. The good news is that all of this can be avoided if you just capture their name and email address so you can remind them to return.

After all, they didn’t land on your site by accident. They were looking for something and the odds are YOU have what they want.

They just weren’t convinced the first time around. And that’s perfectly natural. How often do you buy the first thing you see? Comparison shopping is the way of the Internet, and getting prospective customers to return to your site is the challenge.

A pre-sale series is the answer!

This is actually very easy to do. Just write down the top ten reasons why someone should buy from you, then put each in a follow up message. Send one a day until they are all delivered.

Offer the series to everyone who visits your site and let time do the selling work for you!

Our experience has been that up to 60% of visitors will take your free information if you do a good job of selling the idea.

In my 12 or so years online there have been a handful of things I have learned that are absolute. One of them is this – every website can sell more if they use email marketing well. End of story.

4. SPECIAL PRICING AND REVIEWS

Use email to deliver insider information on special bargains, limited time pricing, and more.

Much like a coupon sheet in your local newspaper, selling advertising in this type of email is a breeze.

The idea here is simple – YOU do the research and prove the value of products and then report on that to people on the list.

When they buy they buy from YOUR affiliate link and everyone wins!

5. HARD TO FIND NEWS

Want to know THE secret to building a loyal mailing list? Give the people what they want!

People love offbeat news, especially when it has a connection to their lives.

Here’s how you can use Twitter today to begin building your list with no money. Start following people you know of and replying to their Tweets. Make sure your reply makes sense and won’t waste people’s time.

Fan Tweets – replying to a Tweet with something like “loved your book about ___” are 100% okay and often much appreciated.

Once you have been following for a while you will get followers too, and become a recognizable name in your circles. When that happens, send a short Tweet about your new mailing list and where people can join it.

Sure, it takes some time and there is software to “automate” this process. But no software in the world can automate the personal touch, and that’s what is needed to build lists.

Idea 4 – Your Blog

If you don’t have a website you might be thinking “sounds good Charlie but where do I send them to sign up?” Fair question.

The answer is your blog. If you don’t have a blog there is simply no reason to wait any longer. Go to Blogger.com and get one now. It’s free, they have templates you can use that look professional.

If you can type, you can blog. And you should. Once you get a blog just put a form on it for your list and you are good to go!

So there you have it, four ways to begin building a real list of your own with no money and no traffic!

People love to be surprised. What you do here is put a note on your website that you are including an “secret bonus” when people buy your product. Retailers have done this for years and called it a ‘grab bag’. Then add one product a week for about eight weeks to your follow up series for clients.

Your clients will love your generosity and you will see your refund rate drop like a rock. A win-win.

4. USE THEM TO BUILD YOUR MAILING LIST

What you do here is to offer an eBook, video, audio, etc. in exchange for subscribing to your ezine or information. This one works! Most smart marketers know that people want a little extra, and here you are giving them that extra while getting what you want.

The key here is to choose a product or products that support or compliment the messages you will be sending.

5. USE THEM TO BOOST YOUR PAY PER CLICK RESPONSE

You know that people always want something for free, right? One great way to use that to your advantage is to spice up your page with a free offer and include that in your pay-per-click advertising.

People who view pay-per-click ads often scan those ads looking for freebies and then visit those sites first. Using products from resale rights packages as giveaways gives YOU the edge when it comes to pay per click.

There are countless examples of people starting with an idea, believing in that idea and then taking the action needed to make that dream come true.

And now it’s your turn.

There is no doubt … the starting point of our success is ideas.

ONE good idea really can change everything!

So the first key is to have an idea, AN AREA OF FOCUS. An idea of what you want to accomplish. An idea of what life would look like if you accomplished this idea.

Some call these ideas goals or dreams or visions. No matter what you call it, your one good idea should inspire you. It should provide the energy you need every day to learn what you need to learn and work as hard as you need to work to not only survive but to thrive!

Your idea, or goal, might be to master the art of email marketing. Great idea! Now let’s take action to make that happen.

Your idea might be to make a living working at home by providing services others need. Great idea! There is a huge market for these services. Now let’s find your customers!

There are many ideas of course, and the above examples are only a few of the many ways people can create their own success online.

The beautiful thing about having ONE great idea is the clarity it brings.

Once you know what you want you will no longer be tempted by what “might” work. You will be too busy learning and honing the skills needed to be the best in YOUR chosen field. It will be all too easy to say “no thank you” to the products and promotions that used to distract you and make you second guess your choices.

HOW CAN YOU FIND YOUR  IDEA TODAY?

Here’s my surefire method for coming up with what to do next.

1. Make a list of your three best ideas – list your best idea first.
2. Draw a line through the bottom two.
3. Do the first one with all your heart.
4. Put the list in a drawer. Once you have accomplished your first idea make a new list!

To help clarify my thinking, I always ask myself this question. “If there were one idea I could pass on to my daughter, what would it be?”

Once I answer that one, I go out and do it.

For me the one good idea is to serve my members. I shut down a profitable consulting practice and GAVE that time instead to DOE members when I added free consulting to the Directory of Ezines membership. Why did I do that? I have been asked that many times. The answer is simple.

Helping others succeed is my one good idea.

Now it’s time to take action.

HOW CAN YOU TAKE ACTION NOW THAT YOU HAVE YOUR IDEA?

In the many years I’ve been online I have experienced a range of economic levels. Since I’m not speaking with you personally, and can’t know your level, I’ve listed ideas to help for each stage of success.

I hope they help you.

===> IF YOU HAVE NO MONEY

It is hard to succeed online with no money. No doubt about it. It CAN be done but it takes work, focus and perseverance. So how can you begin to succeed online if you have no money to spend?

If you have no money and some time the best places to start are with article marketing and social media.

Start making connections with others who might become your customers in the near future or might share ideas with you now about how they are progressing in their journey toward success. Visit forums and find out what people need. Listen to social networking conversations and see what people need that they can’t find. And by all means ASK people what they need so you can offer it to them as an affiliate.

You would be surprised how many people make their first affiliate sale by asking the people they already know what they need and then offering them a product that satisfies that need. Everybody wins!

Here are a couple of other ideas.

1. Introduce the people in your address book to your favorite product.
2. Ask the people in your address book what they need and can’t find.
3. Start an ezine about a topic you know well and build a list of subscribers.
4. Write an ezine article. Offer it to ezine publishers and post it on article directories.
5. Visit forums about your newly chosen business and learn from others who are on the same path you have chosen.

Can’t write? Team up with a writer and split the profits. They do the writing, you distribute the article and you share profits.

===> IF YOU HAVE SOME MONEY

If you have some money to work with the best thing you can do is leave the free methods behind and start learning about the world of paid advertising. Pay per click and ezine advertising are going to be your friends here.

If you have some money (and by some money I mean about $200) then you are in a position to see fast results. You can expect to spend part of your budget and get clicks to any site you want to promote quickly.

1. Do some Pay Per Click Advertising.
2. Buy three low-cost ezine ads.
3. Start promoting a product that compliments your own products.

===> IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF MONEY

If you are among the few who don’t need to make sales right now count yourself blessed. You have the luxury of time. You can make a plan and see it through, knowing you will reap even greater rewards for your patience and thoroughness.

Here are a few ideas that might help you.

1. Create the product you needed but could not find when starting out. Think about how you got to where you are, write up a book about how you did it, and give it away.
2. Go viral – hire a writer to write a product you can give away and that can be branded
3. Sell resale rights – have a product created and sell resale rights for 5 to 10 times more than the product would sell for alone. Provide buyers with the website, the product and everything they need to get started.
4. Create a software product. There is no doubt about it, software sells. Hire a programmer to create a PHP script that does something you need done but have not yet found a great product to do. If you are an active marketer then looking at your own unfilled needs is the right place to start looking for ideas about new products.

No matter where you are today, if you take action on the best idea you have now, your situation at this time next month will be different. It will be better. You will begin to make real progress and no longer suffer from information overload. You will have focus and begin looking forward to every day as a new opportunity to move forward with your idea!

And feeling that way is a beautiful thing indeed!

Most people do, and that’s understandable. The fact is, nothing in our “offline” life prepares us to do business online. Offline we are used to seeing customers or talking with them by phone. Online we don’t do that.

1. Is the group large?
2. Will the group spend money?

There ARE ways to quickly and easily identify markets that will be profitable for you, and I will share those in this ezine.

Once you find the group you need to find (or create) a product they will buy.

It’s actually easier than you might think. The key is to discover what they are buying now. If they are buying now they will buy what you offer.

Ah, advertising. It really is what makes the Internet go round. If you don’t believe me just ask Google. They don’t sell all that ad space for nothing … they do it for the money!

You will HAVE to advertise to succeed online. Happily, you will not have to go broke doing it.

The three best ways to get started advertising online are these.

1. Article marketing
2. Pay per click advertising
3. Ezine advertising

There are many more methods available to you but if you faithfully use those three you will be happily surprised how well they work.

Do you need a website of your own? Yes you do.

But the good news is that creating a website is not the headache it used to be.

Using online services, templates and simple software you can create a beautiful and effective website quickly. I’ll show you how.

HINT: Start gathering what you want to say on your site NOW and not later. Far too many have created a website and then struggled to put words on that site.

The wonderful thing about the Internet is that you can leverage your time like nobody’s business.

Online you can literally do work one time – like writing this article – and have that work pay dividends for years to come.

Years? Yes! I’ve been doing this 10 years now and some of my articles have been online almost all of that time!

So there you have it … five things you must do and know about in order to succeed online.

If you sell as an affiliate or part of a program you will need to focus primarily on the advertising part, but eventually you will need them all.
